What is henna?

Henna is a naturally occurring dye which is extracted from the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis). When applied to the skin, henna leaves behind a rich stain that can last for up to two weeks.

The leaves of the henna plant are dried and ground in to a fine powder, which is mixed in to a paste which is applied to the skin. Unlike tattoo art, which places a pigment under the skin, the henna dye stains the top layers of skin.

The practice of using henna dates back hundreds of years and can be found in a number of different cultures.

  • Is henna safe?
Yes. Joyful Henna Isle of Man uses natural ingredients to hand-make our henna paste. The paste is produced in small batches from natural ingredients, meaning that the paste is safe for almost all skin types. To learn more about what's in our henna paste, please visit the What Is Henna? page.
  • How long does henna last?
For most people, the henna stain will last for 1-2 weeks. There are a number of factors that will affect your stain, including where the henna is placed on your body and how often your body generates new skin cells. Preparation and aftercare are key to getting a rich, long-lasting stain. To find out more, please visit the How To Get A Darker Henna Stain blog.
  • How do I book a henna appointment?
You can check availability for our standard services and book online anytime using the Online Booking page. For bespoke bookings, or sessions not covered on the Online Booking page, please get in touch via the Contact page. We aim to respond to all enquiries within 3 working days.
  • Where are you based?
Everywhere! There's no fixed salon or street address, so henna is avaiable Island-wide with no travel costs. During the summer. you can find Joyful Henna at fairs and festivals around the island. For the rest of the year, keep an eye out for pop-up events and indoor markets. You can get the latest event and availability information directly to your inbox by signing up to the Joyful Henna email newsletter > Sign Up Here.
  • How do I get rid of henna?
Once the henna has stained your skin, the stain will fade as your body naturally replaces the dyed skin cells with fresh, new cells. Time and patience are the best way to remove a henna stain, but soaking in warm water and gentle exfoliation will help to speed up the process.
  • Can henna cause burns or scars?
No, natural henna does not pose a risk of burning or scarring. In some rare cases, people with citrus allergies or sensitive skin may experience mild irritation if the paste is mixed with lemon juice or a strong essential oil. We're happy to arrange a patch test prior to your appointmet, or to discuss a bespoke paste mix to accommodate potential sensitivities wherever possible. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss this further.
